Life And Times
Feminism

There has been a lot of talk of Feminism and Anti-feminism in the media lately, and I would like to explore this topic in this post.

First, I'll post the definition of both words, then I will share my thoughts and feelings on the subject.

Feminism
The advocacy of women's right on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men.

Antifeminist
Someone who does not believe in the social or economic or political equality of men and women.

It stands to reason that as a woman, I believe in equal rights for women in the areas of politics, society, and economics. I mean no woman or man, for that matter, wants to be treated unfairly.

I should be able to hold the same political office as a man as long as I am qualified for the position. Women are no more emotional than men. Women do not have the market cornered when it comes to making decisions based on emotions. Women are able of weighing the Pros and Cons of a situation, and making a decision based on the best interest of all who will be impacted by the decision.

I should not be shunned by society or made to feel less than by society simply based on the fact that I am a woman. Shaming women based on the shape of their body, the way that they dress, their sexuality and/or sexual preference is totally unacceptable, just as making her a social pariah is unacceptable. The "higher" standard that women are held to in comparison to men is a best ridiculous and at worst inhumane.

If I can be hired for the same job as a man and perform that job just as well as a man performs it, then of course I expect to be paid the same amount as a man would be paid for that same job. Paying a woman less for the same type and caliber of work is an injustice.

So I guess that makes me a Feminist!

However, being a feminist does not preclude me from expecting or wanting a man to open the door for me or pull out my chair at the table or walk closest to the curb or any of the other things a gentleman should do for a lady.

Furthermore, wanting or expecting the above does not make me a hypocrite, it just means that I know how to draw the line between business and personal interactions with men. As a human being, I deserve to be treated fairly and with respect in the workplace. Moreover, just as a man wants to come home from work and interacting with world and be made to feel loved and at peace, a woman wants to come home from work and interacting with the world and be made to feel loved and cherished as feminine being.

My desire to be treated like a lady by the man in my life does not make me an Antifeminist.

I am a feminist in it's most basic definition, and I still desire to be treated like a lady and want to have a man to open doors for me, pull out my chair, walk closest to the curb, and offer me is jacket/coat if the temperature drops.

My basic rights are not exclusive of my femininity.
